All our signs start out as raw wood planks. The batch shown here are all Sugar Pine, which is our preferred material. Shapes are traced from templates and hand cut, and the edges are routed with a special profile router bit we had custom made. After all edges are eased and all surfaces sanded, they're ready for priming.

We use an oil based high-build primer which penetrates into the wood fibers without raising the grain, and is most compatible with the oil based enamel top coats that will follow. The primer also acts as a surfacer to allow additional surface sanding before top coats are begun. All told, there will be 4 to 6 coats of various finishes on any given area of your sign.
